The forest floor, once a vibrant tapestry of emerald moss and fallen leaves, now held a brittle, dusty hue. The air itself seemed thinner, carrying a faint, mournful sigh that echoed the wilting spirits of the ancient trees. Luna, her usually bright eyes clouded with a weariness that ran deeper than mere physical exhaustion, padded silently through the muted landscape. Each fallen twig that snapped beneath her paws sounded like a death knell, a stark reminder of the creeping decay that threatened to consume their home.

They had retrieved the bones. The dream had led them true, the valley of shimmering light and the promise of renewal now a reality. The bones, cool and humming with a faint, ethereal energy, lay nestled in a makeshift bed of leaves within their den. Skye, her coat still damp from the last desperate rain, had nuzzled them with a joyous, hopeful bark, her tail a blur of pure optimism. But for Luna, a gnawing unease had settled in her gut, a cold counterpoint to the warmth of their success.

She paused, lifting her muzzle to the sky. The sun, a pale disc behind a veil of haze, offered little comfort. The wind rustled through the skeletal branches above, carrying whispers that seemed to mock her. Not strong enough. Not enough. The voices were the echoes of her deepest fears, a secret she had guarded fiercely, even from Skye.
