The air grew thick with menace. The scent of them, sharp and primal, had been a low thrumming beneath the forest floor for miles, a warning that had grown steadily louder. Now, it was a roar, a suffocating blanket pressing in from all sides. Luna flattened her ears, a low growl rumbling in her chest, a sound she hadn't made since she was a pup defending her favorite squeaky toy. Beside her, Skye was a coiled spring, her tail held stiffly, her amber eyes darting, absorbing every shadow, every rustle of leaves.

They were surrounded. Not by the creeping shadows of the ancient trees, or the rustling undergrowth that usually hid the forest’s secrets. This was a deliberate, organized closing of ranks. The wild dogs. Their territory, their rules. And Luna and Skye, with their strange dream and their even stranger quest, had stumbled into the heart of their domain.

A hulking brute, scarred and grizzled, stepped out from the gloom, his hackles raised, a snarl twisting his muzzle. He was the alpha, Luna could feel it, the raw power radiating from him like heat from a dying ember. His eyes, dark and hard as obsidian, fixed on Luna, then flickered to Skye.
