After finding a threatening note on Javier's truck, he and Nia call Sheriff Dawson, who takes the note and promises to investigate. They spend the rest of the day together, processing their fear through quiet moments, cooking, and talking on the porch. That night, they reaffirm their commitment and fall asleep in each other's arms, finding peace despite the looming danger.
Javier stood there, the note burning against his palm. The words kept repeating in his head: You can't hide from us. Not here. Not anywhere. See you soon.
Nia was already on the phone with Dawson, her voice tight but steady. He watched her pace the driveway, one hand pressed to her ear, the other gripping her hip. The chickens scattered at her feet, clucking in protest.
He looked at the house. The windows. The tree line. Nothing moved. But someone had been here. They had walked up to his truck while he was inside, sleeping, holding Nia, thinking he was safe.
