Javier wakes up in Nia's bed to a peaceful morning, but a phone call from Sheriff Dawson shatters it: Eladio's lawsuit has escalated, and a federal warrant is being sought. Javier and Nia share a tense, intimate conversation where she insists on facing it together. Javier goes to meet the sheriff, and on the way back, he spots a car with California plates following him. He loses it, but returns to find Nia's house disturbed—a note on the door reads 'You can't hide from us.'
The morning light came soft through the curtains, painting the room in shades of gold and dust. Javier lay still, Nia's head on his chest, her breath slow and even. Her hand rested over his heart, and he could feel the weight of her trust settled into his bones. For a long moment, he let himself believe this was his life—waking up to her, the smell of her hair, the quiet hum of a house that felt like home.
Then his phone buzzed on the nightstand.
He reached for it, careful not to wake her. The screen showed Sheriff Dawson's name. His stomach tightened. He answered in a whisper.
