A few days after their confession, Javier and Nia share a quiet evening alone. They cook together, slow dance in the kitchen, and finally acknowledge the deepening intimacy between them. Javier stays the night in her room for the first time, holding her close as they fall asleep, solidifying their commitment.
Three days had passed since the night at the pond, and Javier still felt the echo of her words. I think I'm falling in love with you. He'd said it back, and meant it, but something had shifted between them since then. A new kind of quiet. A new kind of waiting.
Nia moved around the kitchen like she always did, but there was a charge in the air now. A tension that hummed whenever their hands brushed, whenever their eyes met too long. The boys had noticed too. Micah kept asking if Javier was going to be their dad now, and Isaiah had started giving them space, disappearing to his room after dinner without being asked.
Tonight, the boys were at Rafael's for a sleepover. Rafael had insisted, said they needed a break, and Nia had agreed after a long pause. She'd looked at Javier when she hung up the phone, a question in her eyes.
