Chapter 24
Chapter 24
Javier and Nia share a quiet evening after the boys go to bed. They cook together, dance in the kitchen, and open up about their pasts. Nia reveals her fear of losing the peace she's built, and Javier promises he's not going anywhere. Their intimacy deepens with a slow kiss and a night spent on the porch under the stars.
The house fell quiet after Nia put the boys to bed. Micah had fought sleep, as usual, his small voice carrying down the hall with protests and pleas for one more story. Isaiah had gone without a word, just a nod toward Javier that felt like trust. Now the only sounds were the hum of the refrigerator and the soft creak of the old floorboards as Nia walked back into the kitchen.
Javier was at the sink, rinsing the dinner plates. He heard her footsteps, felt her presence before she spoke.
"You don't have to do that."
