Javier spends a peaceful day with Nia and the boys, going fishing and sharing quiet moments. That evening, Sheriff Dawson calls to report that 'C' has been arrested on an unrelated warrant, neutralizing the threat. Javier feels a quiet relief and a deepened sense of belonging.
The morning came slow and golden, the way mornings did in Alabama. Javier sat on the porch steps with his coffee, watching the mist burn off the fields. The air smelled like dew and dirt and something green he still couldn't name.
Behind him, the screen door creaked. Micah came out in mismatched pajamas, dragging a teddy bear by one ear.
"You're up early," Javier said.
