A quiet morning at Nia's new nail shop is interrupted when a certified letter arrives from Eladio's lawyer, threatening to reopen old cases unless Javier returns to California. Javier and Nia discuss the choice before them, and Javier decides to face it legally with the sheriff's help rather than run or fight. Isaiah overhears and asks if Javier is leaving, leading to a tender moment where Javier promises to stay. The chapter ends with Javier mailing a response, choosing to stand his ground.
The morning light came through the wide front window of Nia's Nails & More, casting long rectangles of gold across the polished floor. Javier sat in one of the pedicure chairs, feet propped up, watching Nia arrange bottles of polish on a new shelf she'd hung herself.
She stepped back, tilting her head. "What do you think?"
"I think you've rearranged that shelf four times this week."
