Javier ignores the threatening text from 'C,' choosing instead to build his new life with Nia and the boys. With the sheriff's help, the final threat from California is neutralized without violence. Months later, Nia opens her nail shop, Isaiah fully trusts Javier, and the family walks together down the back road as the streetlights fade behind them.
Javier stared at the phone. The text glowed in the dark, a single line that pulled him back into the world he’d been trying to leave.
"Nice try. But you can't hide forever. —C"
His thumb hovered over the keyboard. Part of him wanted to type back, to demand who it was, to threaten, to fight. That was the old instinct. The one that had kept him alive in California but dead inside everywhere else.
