Chapter 19
With the 48-hour deadline from Eladio looming, Javier and Nia plan their next move. Javier decides to set a trap with the sheriff's help, but Eladio outmaneuvers them and shows up at Nia's house with a gun. Javier chooses to talk him down instead of fighting, and the sheriff arrests Eladio. However, Eladio's final words hint at a larger threat still coming from California.
The sun came up slow over Alabama, pink and gold bleeding through the trees. Javier hadn't slept. He sat on the porch steps, a half-cold cup of coffee in his hand, watching the road where Eladio's sedan had disappeared the night before.
Nia found him there when she came out to feed the chickens. She didn't say anything. Just sat down next to him and handed him a piece of warm bread with butter. He took it, ate it without tasting it.
"You been out here all night?" she asked.
