Javier confronts Eladio on the driveway. Eladio threatens Nia and the boys, demanding Javier return to California. Javier refuses and stands his ground, but Eladio reveals he knows about Isaiah and Micah. Nia steps onto the porch, refusing to be intimidated. The sheriff arrives, forcing Eladio to leave, but he warns he'll be watching. The chapter ends with Javier realizing the danger is far from over.
Javier's boots hit the gravel, each step deliberate. The evening air was thick, cicadas screaming from the trees. Eladio stood by the open door of the sedan, arms loose at his sides, calm like a man who had nothing to fear.
Javier stopped ten feet away. Close enough to read his face, far enough to react.
"You got a lot of nerve showing up here," Javier said.
