Chapter 17
Chapter 17
The morning after Dre's confrontation, Javier receives a threatening text from an unknown number. He and Nia learn the texter is Eladio, a high-ranking figure from Javier's past in California. Javier decides to stay and face him with the sheriff's help, while Isaiah takes a small step toward trusting him. The chapter ends as a car with California plates arrives at Nia's house.
Javier woke to the smell of bacon and the sound of Micah’s laughter drifting through the thin walls of Nia’s house. For a moment, the weight in his chest lifted. Then he remembered the text. The taillights of Dre’s truck disappearing into the dark. The unknown number on his phone.
He sat up, rubbed his face, and reached for his phone on the nightstand. No new messages. But the old one still stared back at him: You handled that well. But the next one won't be so easy. —An old friend
He held the phone like it might bite him.
