A quiet day with Nia and the boys gives Javier a glimpse of the life he wants, but the peace is shattered when Marcus calls with news that a car carrying three men from California has been spotted heading toward town. Javier prepares to face them without violence, but the confrontation forces him to choose between his old instincts and the family he's building.
The morning passed slow and warm, the way Alabama mornings do when the world hasn't figured out it's supposed to be complicated. Javier sat on the porch steps, Micah beside him, a half-eaten pancake in the kid's hand. The chickens wandered in the yard, pecking at nothing, and somewhere down the road, a lawnmower hummed.
Isaiah came out with a basketball, bouncing it on the dirt. He looked at Javier, then at the hoop nailed to the side of the shed.
"You play?"
