Chapter 14
The Sea's New Queen
Elara's influence grows. Her village thrives under her guidance, her reputation spreading. She is a beacon of uncanny luck and resilience.
The salt wind, usually a boisterous, untamed thing, seemed to coax itself around the village, a gentler breath that carried the scent of drying nets and simmering fish stew. It was a scent Elara knew intimately, a symphony of her days and nights. Her hands, calloused and nimble, moved with a familiar rhythm, weaving strands of hemp into a tapestry of strength. Each knot was a whispered promise, each loop a silent prayer. The hum that escaped her lips was not a tune one could whistle, but a vibration that seemed to resonate with the very bones of the world, a low thrum that spoke of tides and depths.
She’d always been like this, they said. A little strange. Her nets were always the first to be mended, the strongest to hold. Her catches, even when the sea was sullen and unforgiving, were always just a little more bountiful. The villagers, for the most part, had grown accustomed to it. They attributed it to luck, to a peculiar knack, to the blessings of a benevolent sea. But Elara knew. She knew it was more than luck. It was a conversation, a delicate dance with the currents, a pact sealed not in ink, but in brine and moonlight.
Today, the sea was a placid expanse of shimmering sapphire, mirroring the cloudless sky. Elara stood at the edge of the water, the hem of her simple linen dress brushing against the cool, damp sand. She held a length of mended net, its diamond weave perfect, its strength unquestionable. She cast her gaze seaward, not with the hopeful anticipation of a fisherman, but with the quiet recognition of a soul acknowledging another. The water, in turn, seemed to hold its breath, the usual playful lapping at the shore softening to a murmur.
