Panic, a cold, sharp splinter, lodged itself deep within Noeh’s chest. One moment he was contemplating the gentle sway of the old tree’s branches, the next, the world had tilted on its axis, a terrifying roar shattering the quietude. His eyes, wide and unblinking, fixed on the magnificent, terrifying creature that had materialized from the dappled sunlight. A lion. Not just any lion, but one with a mane like a crown of burnished gold, eyes like molten amber, and teeth that gleamed with a primal hunger.

His mind, usually a calm pool of contemplation, churned into a frantic torrent. Every instinct screamed *danger*. Every fiber of his being urged him to *run*. He didn’t think, he simply reacted. His worn tunic, patched and faded, snagged on a low-hanging root as he spun around, his bare feet finding purchase on the familiar, yet suddenly treacherous, earth. The ground, usually a comforting carpet of moss and fallen leaves, felt rough and unforgiving beneath his soles, each stone a sharp jab, each twig a stinging whip. But the pain was a distant echo, drowned out by the thunder of his own heart, a frantic drumbeat against his ribs, urging him onward, faster, faster.

The lion’s roar, a sound that vibrated through the very marrow of his bones, spurred him on. It was a sound of pure power, of absolute dominion, and in that moment, Noeh felt utterly insignificant, a fragile reed in the path of a hurricane. He risked a fleeting glance over his shoulder. The lion was already moving, a blur of tawny muscle and boundless energy. It covered ground with astonishing speed, its powerful legs devouring the distance between them with terrifying ease.
