Echoes of Deceit
Awakening to his betrayal, Romero's world crumbles. He realizes Seajay's past is far more perilous than he ever imagined, and his love was built on fragile lies.
The world swam back into focus like a watercolor painting left out in the rain, colors bleeding into one another, shapes indistinct and wavering. A throbbing ache behind my eyes was the first sensation, followed by the gritty feel of dirt against my cheek. My mouth tasted of copper and dust, a grim reminder of the last thing I remembered: the sickening crunch of impact, the blinding flash of headlights, and Seajay’s terrified scream.
Seajay. The name itself was a shard of glass in my raw throat. It wasn’t the pain that brought the first tear to my eye, but the chilling certainty that had settled in my gut while I was lost in the dark. She hadn’t tried to save me. She had led me there.
My body protested with every shallow breath, a symphony of bruised ribs and aching muscles. I pushed myself up, wincing, and surveyed my surroundings. A desolate stretch of road, swallowed by the encroaching twilight. Twisted metal, the mangled remains of my car, lay a few yards away, a testament to the violence of the encounter. But there was no sign of Seajay. No sign of Rayan. Just the oppressive silence of the countryside, broken only by the mournful cry of a distant owl.
