The Empty Garden

The air in the abandoned greenhouse was thick with the cloying scent of decay, a stark contrast to the jasmine that had once perfumed my dreams. I’d followed Seajay’s cryptic message here, a desperate attempt to understand the knot of unease that had tightened in my gut since Rayan’s shadow had fallen across our lives. The note had been brief, almost frantic, urging me to meet her at this forgotten place, a place she claimed held answers. My heart, ever the optimist, had leaped at the chance to see her, to reassure her, to pull her close and shield her from whatever darkness pursued her. Now, standing amidst the skeletal remains of forgotten blooms, a chill that had nothing to do with the evening air snaked through me.

The glass panes were shattered, jagged teeth grinning at the bruised twilight sky. Dust motes danced in the weak shafts of dying light, illuminating a scene of neglect and ruin. Pots lay overturned, their contents spilled like forgotten secrets onto the cracked concrete floor. A rusted watering can lay on its side, a metallic tear weeping onto the parched earth. It was a graveyard of aspirations, a fitting metaphor for the fragile hope that had bloomed between Seajay and me.

“Seajay?” My voice, usually so full of a confident warmth, sounded thin, swallowed by the oppressive silence. I took a tentative step further into the gloom, my eyes scanning the shadows, searching for her familiar silhouette, the cascade of dark hair. Nothing. Only the whisper of wind through broken glass and the rustle of dead leaves.
