Chapter 17
The Bloom of Truth
The final layers of Seajay's past are revealed. Her relationship with Romero, her betrayal, and her fear of Rayan are laid bare, explaining her complex actions.
The air in the abandoned warehouse tasted of rust and forgotten dreams. Each breath I took felt heavy, thick with the dust of a thousand untold stories. I lay on the cold concrete, the throbbing in my skull a dull counterpoint to the frantic beat of my heart. How long had I been here? Minutes? Hours? The single, grimy window high above offered no clue, only a smear of bruised twilight. My vision swam, the edges of my world blurred, but one image, sharp and agonizing, remained: Seajay’s face.
Her eyes, usually a kaleidoscope of shifting blues and greens, had been clouded with a desperation I hadn't understood then. Her voice, a melody that had once soothed my soul, had twisted into a plea, a command, a trap. “Romero, you have to trust me,” she’d whispered, her breath ghosting against my ear as we’d navigated the labyrinthine corridors of this derelict place. The name itself was a venomous hiss, a serpent coiled in the darkness of my mind. I remembered the glint of steel, the sickening thud, and then… nothing. Rayan had been there, a hulking shadow in the periphery, his laughter a guttural growl that promised retribution. But it was Seajay’s hand that had pushed me, Seajay’s voice that had lured me into the heart of this desolation.
