The village bell, that mournful clang that usually signaled the day’s end, now shrieked with a frantic urgency, each ring a stab of fear into the heart of Iluwa. The Harvest Moon, a celestial orb of impossible gold, had indeed appeared, not in three days as tradition dictated, but tonight, casting an eerie, amplified glow upon the already anxious faces gathered in the square. My grandmother’s warnings, Elder Maeve’s stern pronouncements, the hushed, fearful tales of travelers – they all coalesced into a suffocating dread that seemed to press down from the sky. Yet, as panic erupted, as doors slammed shut like the closing of coffins, something inside me, a stubborn ember of defiance, refused to be extinguished.

“I will not hide tonight,” I’d whispered, the words a fragile vow against the rising tide of terror. “I will find out whether this curse is real… or whether someone has been fooling us all.” My gaze, fixed on the moon, felt like a challenge. Only I remained, a solitary figure bathed in the moon’s unforgiving light, the echoes of GONG! GONG! GONG! still vibrating in the air. I looked at the familiar cobblestones, the thatched roofs, the sturdy adobe walls that had always offered a sense of security, now seeming to shrink away from the oppressive presence of the night.
