Chapter 6
Kael's Revelation
Kael admits to noticing inconsistencies over the years. He shares a story about a past disappearance that doesn't align with the elders' narrative, solidifying Amara's resolve.
The air in Iluwa had grown thick, heavy with an unspoken dread that clung to the very breath I took. The sudden, early arrival of the Harvest Moon had plunged the village into a panic that was both familiar and, for me, utterly maddening. While others scrambled behind bolted doors, their faces etched with the age-old terror, I stood in the village square, the colossal orb of the moon painting the world in shades of ethereal gold. It was a sight of breathtaking beauty, yet it was the source of so much misery. Tonight, I decided, that would change. Tonight, I would face the silence, not with fear, but with an unyielding curiosity.
The ringing of the village bell, a sound usually reserved for celebrations or urgent gatherings, had been a jarring announcement of the curse's premature arrival. It echoed through the deserted lanes, a mournful dirge for a community held captive by its own beliefs. The marketplace, usually bustling with the last-minute preparations for the night, was now eerily empty, its stalls like skeletal remains under the moon's accusatory glare.
I remained, a lone sentinel against the tide of fear. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the vast silence. But it wasn't the fear of the unknown that propelled me; it was a simmering anger, a deep-seated frustration with the generations of unquestioning obedience. The old traveler's words, "The most dangerous curse is the one people believe without seeking the truth," echoed in my mind, a beacon in the encroaching darkness. He was gone now, vanished as mysteriously as he had arrived, leaving behind only the unsettling resonance of his wisdom.
