Chapter 19
Scars and Survival
The immediate danger has passed, but Elara is irrevocably changed. The physical and emotional scars are deep, a constant reminder of the nightmarish ordeal.
The silence was the first thing that settled, heavy and suffocating, after the cacophony of the chase. It wasn’t a peaceful quiet, but a void, a gaping maw where sounds should have been. I closed my eyes, trying to force the images back, to piece together the fragments of my life, but there was only the Weaver’s shadow, the cold gleam of his knife, the terror etched into my mother’s final, silent plea.
