The air in the cramped attic space was thick with the smell of dust and forgotten things. Moonlight, a pale, ethereal wash, filtered through a grimy window, illuminating motes dancing in the stillness. I clutched the brittle pages of my mother’s journal, its worn leather cool against my trembling fingers. Each word was a revelation, a shard of glass piercing the fog that had clouded my mind. The journal felt impossibly heavy, a burden and a guide all at once. It held the truth, but it also held the key to my destruction.
