The familiar, comforting warmth of the sun on her skin began to fade, replaced by a subtle coolness that whispered of change. Lily, still buzzing with the joy of her beach day, felt it first as a gentle tug at her toes, a different kind of rhythm in the waves that lapped at the shore. It wasn't the playful dance of the afternoon, but a deeper, more insistent pulse, like a giant heart beginning to beat a little faster beneath the surface. The sky, once a boundless expanse of cerulean, was now streaked with hues of lavender and a bruised, dusky rose. A peculiar stillness settled over the water, a hush that felt less like peace and more like anticipation.
She looked towards the old sea turtle, his wise eyes observing the shifting sea with a quiet intensity. “Do you feel it, Lily?” he rumbled, his voice a low vibration that seemed to echo the ocean’s growing unrest. “The air is changing. The water remembers.”
Lily nodded, a prickle of unease dancing on her skin. The vibrant colours of the underwater garden, which had seemed so solid and eternal just moments before, now appeared to flicker at the edges, their luminescence dimming like candles in a draft. The coral branches, usually so still and proud, seemed to sway with a nervous energy, their polyps retracting slightly. The schools of tiny, iridescent fish, which had darted and twirled with carefree abandon, now huddled closer together, their scales catching the fading light like a thousand tiny, worried eyes.
