Elara and Kael find an iron room with a box containing a feather that restores the memory of the artifact's location and reveals a warded cave for Thorne. Elara decides to go up the mountain alone through the cave system, leaving Kael to guard Thorne.
The Veilwood thinned as they climbed. Roots gave way to rock, and the soft blue glow of moss faded into grey gravel that crunched underfoot. Kael carried Thorne with his teeth gritted, sweat dripping from his jaw. Elara walked beside them, the blank book pressed against her chest like a shield that had run out of arrows.
She kept glancing back. The forest behind them was still. No shadows. No whispers. But the silence felt wrong—like a held breath before a scream.
“How much further?” Kael’s voice cracked.
