The Mirror of Lost Things
Elara's forgotten memory surfaces in a mirror ruin, revealing the artifact's location at Veilfang Peak, but the Shadow Weaver sees it too. After a confrontation, the book goes blank. They must race to the peak before the new moon.
The Veilwood swallowed the last light like a beast drawing breath. Every step Elara took felt off-balance, as though the ground tilted when she wasn't looking. She kept her hand pressed against the cover of the book, but the leather was foreign—no grain she recognized, no warmth. It might as well have been someone else's belonging.
Kael moved ahead, Thorne slung across his shoulders like a sack of grain. The old man's feet dragged. His chest rose and fell, but barely. Kael didn't complain. He just kept walking, eyes scanning the trees, jaw tight.
“We need to stop,” Elara said. Her voice scraped out dry. “If he dies, we lose everything he knows.”
