Elara refuses the Shadow Weaver's trade, instead using the book to perform an unbinding spell that costs her a memory. The shadow is driven off, but Thorne collapses and the shard goes dark. Forgetting what she sacrificed, Elara leads the group deeper into the Veilwood toward the new moon.

The obsidian pillar groaned, cracks spiderwebbing across its surface like black lightning frozen mid-strike. Thorne’s hands trembled as he pressed the crystal shard harder against the runes, but the blue light flickered and died in patches. Elara felt the warmth of the book pulse against her palms, a heartbeat that didn’t match her own.

“The ward is gone,” Thorne whispered. “She’s through.”

The shadow wearing Lyra’s face stepped out of the darkness, not walking, but unfolding, like a flower of night blooming in reverse. Its feet didn’t touch the moss. Behind it, the Veilwood’s trees twisted away, branches curling as if to escape.
