Chapter 5
Thorne reveals that the crystal shard is a fragment of his soul, and using it to seal the barrier will kill him. Elara, Kael, and Thorne rest in a clearing, where a shadow wearing Elara's face attacks, having entered through her fear. Elara reads words from the book instinctively, banishing the shadow, but Thorne warns that each use of the book gives the Shadow Weaver a stronger foothold in her.
The Veilwood pressed in around them, soft and watchful. Tree trunks glowed from within like candles wrapped in bark, and the air smelled of damp earth and something sweet, like night-blooming flowers. Elara’s footsteps made no sound on the mossy path. Even the book in her satchel felt lighter, as if the forest was drinking its weight.
Kael walked beside her, his hand brushing hers every few steps. She didn’t pull away. His presence was the only solid thing in a world that kept shifting, flickering at the edges of her vision.
“How much farther?” she asked, more to break the quiet than for an answer.
