Chapter 4
The River of Light
Elara, Kael, and Thorne descend into the tunnels. Thorne reveals he was one of the original keepers who sealed the Shadow Weaver, and that Kael's bloodline is the crack in the seal. Kael's guilt over his sister's death is exposed. They reach the underground river and are ambushed by a projection of the Shadow Weaver. Elara retrieves the book, and they cross the river into the Veilwood. Thorne warns that the Shadow Weaver can use fear as a vessel to follow. They press on, the new moon approaching.
The stairwell spiraled downward, each step deeper into the earth. The darkness pressed in around them, thick and alive, broken only by the faint silver glow of Thorne's staff. Elara kept her free hand pressed against the cold stone wall, counting the steps to anchor herself. One, two, three—anything to keep from thinking about the voice that had followed them from above.
Kael's grip on her hand was steady, though she could feel the tremor in his fingers. He was still weak from the healing draft. She tightened her hold, and he glanced at her, his face half-lit by Thorne's light.
"How far down does this go?" Elara whispered.
