Chapter 20: The Star's Answer
Elara and Kael walk south through the Veilwood as the new moon approaches. They reach a glade where the silver star descends, and the Veilwood offers a final choice: separate into their own worlds or stay together as guardians of the boundary. They choose each other, and the sphere halves are transformed into a new anchor, allowing them to live between realms. The story ends with them standing together under starlight, at peace.
The Veilwood grew darker as they walked, the silver and blue leaves overhead catching the last light. Elara kept her hand in Kael’s, the broken sphere halves heavy in her pocket. The grass beneath their feet was soft, damp with evening dew.
“How long do you think we have?” Kael asked, his voice low.
Elara looked up. The first star had grown brighter, pulsing gently. “The Veilwood said until the new moon. That’s tomorrow, I think. Maybe tonight.”
