Chapter 10
Chapter 10 – The Weight of a Confession
In a warded cave at the mountain's base, Elara prepares to leave Kael and Thorne behind. Before she goes, Kael reveals a painful secret: his sister willingly followed the Shadow Weaver and died by his hand when he tried to stop her. Elara promises to return and enters the mountain alone. After crawling through a narrow tunnel, she reaches a chamber with a carved pillar—and hears the Shadow Weaver's whisper inside the mountain with her.
The warded cave was little more than a pocket in the rock—low ceiling, dry floor, a single crack in the wall that let in a ribbon of starlight. Elara settled Thorne against the far wall, his back to the stone, his breathing so shallow she had to lean close to hear it. The crystal shard on his chest was a dark, dead thing. No warmth. No pulse of light.
Kael stood at the entrance, staring out at the canyon they'd just crossed. The shadows had retreated, but they were still out there—waiting, stretching, tasting the air. He didn't turn around when she walked up beside him.
“He's stable for now,” she said. “The wards should hold.”
