Chapter 10

Chapter 10 — The Ones Who Watch

Jasper observes Skylia, Hemlock, and Brody fleeing through the woods from Hemlock's cabin toward the Parsons root cellar as shadows rise from below. He intervenes to slow the pursuing shadows, revealing himself as a long-time observer of Greythorne's cycles. The group reaches the Parsons property, but Brody collapses from exhaustion. Maya writes through the notebook with urgent new information: the shadows have learned iron's patterns from decades of Brody's teachings and are adapting faster than before. Hemlock recognizes Jasper from 1973, when Eleanor crossed. Jasper reveals he has watched every Thinning cycle since then without intervening—until now—because Skylia's dual-mark sensitivity is unprecedented. The notebook warns that the door's frequency shift means the old containment math will no longer hold. As shadows begin probing the cellar's defenses, Skylia demands answers about her mother Anne Koenig's role in the 2001 cycle, and Jasper implies Anne tried a third option between sacrifice and sealing—one that may be the only path left.

The girl—Skylia—is fast. She moves through the underbrush like she's done it before, which she hasn't, not at this speed, not in the dark. But sensitivity has its perks. The woods know her. They part just enough. Not because they're friendly. Because they're uncertain. She carries two frequencies now and the forest can't decide which one to obey.
