Chapter 9

Chapter 9 — The Width of the Door

Sheriff Brody arrives at Hemlock's cabin to find the bleeding tree sealed with iron and the girl inside. He confronts Hemlock about the disruption, revealing the system of managed sacrifice he has maintained for decades to keep the door from opening fully. Skylia refuses to surrender the iron rod, and Brody explains the Thinning's mathematics—that sensitives are drawn to the door and must be fed to it to prevent total breach. When he attempts to remove the iron from the tree's root, the shadows respond with unprecedented aggression, breaching the cabin's iron lining in multiple places simultaneously. The cabin's defenses fail, and all three are forced outside into the dark, where the shadows demonstrate a new capability: coordinated movement. Brody fires into the darkness but the shadows regroup instantly. He realizes the door has been changing on its own—the iron Skylia drove in didn't just narrow it; it forced the shadows to adapt. Now they are learning to work together rather than competing for individual passage. The chapter ends with Brody seeing both Skylia and Maya's marks glowing in unison through the connection, understanding that the door now recognizes two keepers instead of one.

I've been doing this job for thirty-one years. You learn to read a driveway.

The gravel tells you things. How many vehicles, how recently, what weight class, whether they came fast or slow. This access road to Hemlock's cabin is a single lane cut through twenty years of second-growth oak, and I've been up it maybe four hundred times since I took over from Walt Eberhardt in '92. I know every pothole, every washout channel, every place where the clay gets slick after rain. I know how the gravel sounds under my tires when nobody else has been through in weeks—loose, undisturbed, the small stones clicking against each other like teeth chattering.

Tonight the gravel is chewed up. Fresh tracks. Someone came up here fast and didn't care about their suspension.
