Silas had been watching me, his gaze steady and unreadable, as I tended to the Sunpetal, its golden petals unfurling with a quiet sigh.

"You have a way with them," he'd said, his voice a low rumble, earlier that morning. It wasn't a compliment, not really, but something akin to surprised acknowledgement. "A natural touch. One I haven't seen in… a long time."

Now, as the afternoon sun slanted through the dusty glass, casting long, dancing shadows, he finally sat on the overturned terracotta pot, his usual gruffness softened by an unexpected weariness. The gnarled hands that had so expertly pruned and coaxed life from this forgotten sanctuary rested on his knees.
