The old oak tree in the quad, its branches gnarled and ancient like the bones of a forgotten giant, always brought it back. The scent of damp earth after a spring rain, the rough bark beneath my fingertips – it was a sensory echo from a life I’d carefully buried. Two years. Two years since I’d last stood beneath its shade, a girl named Hallie Ford, not the phantom Andrea Good Man. Now, the phantom was back, and the girl was trying her best to disappear within its shadow.
A gust of wind rustled the leaves, a whisper that seemed to pull at the edges of my carefully constructed composure. It carried with it the faint, metallic tang of something I couldn’t quite place, something that pricked at my senses, a familiar unease. It was the kind of scent that clung to the edges of nightmares, the scent of danger disguised as normalcy. It reminded me of hushed conversations in dimly lit rooms, of the cold gleam of steel, of the ever-present weight of my father’s legacy.
Lexi, bless her oblivious heart, nudged my arm. "Earth to Hallie? You're staring at that tree like it owes you money." She grinned, her eyes bright with an innocent mischief that was a balm to my fractured soul. "Come on, Professor Davies is about to launch into his lecture on Renaissance art. You know how he gets when he’s passionate about Botticelli."
