Chapter 16
Confrontation Under Stars
A tense confrontation occurs, pushing Hallie and Liam to the brink. The moonlight witnesses their raw emotions, the unspoken feelings finally threatening to surface.
The air hung thick and heavy, a tangible blanket woven from unspoken words and the suffocating scent of blooming jasmine. It was the kind of night that felt both ancient and brand new, a canvas of midnight velvet dusted with a million pinpricks of starlight. I’d sought refuge in the quiet solitude of the university’s botanical gardens, the manicured hedges and whispering leaves a welcome balm to my frayed nerves. The weight of my secret, Andrea Good Man, the ghost of my past, pressed down on me, a constant, dull ache. Here, as Hallie Ford, I could almost breathe. Almost.
My escape, however, was short-lived. A shadow detached itself from the deeper darkness beneath an ancient oak, and my heart, always a traitor, leaped into my throat. Liam Blackwood. Of course. It always seemed to be him, a dark constellation orbiting my every move. He moved with a predator’s grace, silent and unnervingly deliberate, until he was standing mere feet away, his presence a palpable force that seemed to bend the very moonlight around him.
His eyes, the color of a stormy sea, were fixed on me, and for the first time, I saw something beyond the usual taunting glint. There was a flicker, a question, a raw intensity that made my breath hitch. He didn’t speak, and neither did I. The silence stretched, taut and charged, a fragile bridge between us that felt on the verge of snapping. The distant hum of the city was a muted counterpoint to the frantic thrumming of my own pulse.
