The air in the mansion seemed to thicken the moment the heavy oak door creaked open. It wasn’t just the scent of expensive cologne and the faint, lingering trace of cigar smoke that announced his arrival; it was a palpable shift in the very atmosphere, a tightening of invisible reins. Father. Vito Moretti. He was back.

I’d been lounging by the grand fireplace, a book open but unread on my lap, the silence of the house a fragile thing I’d grown accustomed to. Marco had been across the room, his usual sentinel stance softened by the quiet hum of domesticity we’d cultivated in his absence. His head snapped up, his eyes, usually so steady on me, now fixed on the entryway. A flicker of something unreadable crossed his face – surprise, perhaps, or a more complex, buried emotion.

“Bella,” he said, his voice a low rumble, a sound I’d come to associate with both comfort and a coiled tension.
