The air in the penthouse, usually thick with the scent of expensive cologne and the quiet hum of unseen power, had begun to feel brittle, charged with an unspoken urgency. It started as a whisper, a phantom chill that slithered through the marble halls and danced in the periphery of my vision. Vito Moretti. The words, when they finally solidified, were delivered by Marco, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the plush rug beneath my bare feet. He’d been pacing, a rare display of agitation from the usually stoic man, his eyes dark and troubled as he relayed the news. My father was returning. Sooner than anticipated. The business trip, the one that had conveniently coincided with Marco’s new, suffocating guardianship, was drawing to a close.

A knot tightened in my stomach, a strange mix of exhilarating panic and a dull ache of disappointment. Exhilarating because the charade, the delicate dance of seduction and restraint, was about to be tested under the most intense spotlight. Disappointment because, in the stolen moments, in the hushed confessions whispered against the backdrop of our shared transgression, I had found something I hadn't dared to search for. Something that felt terrifyingly like… belonging.

Marco’s gaze, usually so steady, flickered with an unease I hadn’t seen before. He ran a hand through his dark hair, a gesture of a man wrestling with an invisible beast. “He’s… he’s coming back,” he repeated, the words heavy with implications I knew he understood all too well. “The timelines shifted. He expects everything to be… as it was.”
