I’d been lounging by the grand fireplace, a book open but unread on my lap, the silence of the house a fragile thing I’d grown accustomed to. Marco had been across the room, his usual sentinel stance softened by the quiet hum of domesticity we’d cultivated in his absence. His head snapped up, his eyes, usually so steady on me, now fixed on the entryway. A flicker of something unreadable crossed his face – surprise, perhaps, or a more complex, buried emotion.
