A New Beginning
Marco is granted a tentative acceptance. He is allowed to be with Isabella, but under Vito's constant, discerning gaze. Their love is permitted, but never entirely free.
The air in the study was thick with unspoken words, a palpable tension that had hung between my father and Marco for what felt like an eternity. I sat on the edge of the plush armchair, my fingers laced so tightly my knuckles were white, trying to decipher the subtle shifts in their expressions, the minute tremors in their voices. Vito, my father, was a master of poker faces, his gaze an impenetrable shield. Marco, usually so stoic, seemed to vibrate with an inner turmoil, his jaw tight, his eyes flicking between my father and me with an intensity that mirrored my own.
“You understand the implications, Marco,” my father’s voice was a low rumble, each word carefully chosen, like stones being placed with deliberate precision. He leaned back in his chair, his hands steepled before him, his eyes, dark and knowing, fixed on Marco. “This is not a game. This is family.”
Marco’s response was immediate, unwavering. “I understand, Don Moretti. My loyalty has always been to you and your family. Isabella’s safety and well-being are my paramount concern.”
