The air in the penthouse was thick, not with the usual scent of expensive cigar smoke and polished leather, but with a palpable tension that seemed to vibrate in the very marrow of my bones. Marco stood beside me, his hand resting lightly on the small of my back, a silent anchor in the storm I knew was about to break. Across the vast expanse of the living room, my father, Vito Moretti, sat in his favorite armchair, the one that always seemed to swallow him whole, his gaze, usually a sharp, assessing gleam, now held a peculiar stillness. It was the stillness before the thunder, the quiet that precedes a devastating crack.

He hadn’t bellowed, hadn’t raged, hadn’t thrown anything. That was the unnerving part. The fury I’d braced myself for, the torrent of accusations and threats, was replaced by this unnerving calm, this unnerving observation. It was as if he were dissecting us, not with anger, but with a cold, clinical precision.

“So,” he began, his voice a low rumble that still held the authority of a king. “This is what happens when I leave you in charge, Marco.”
