The air in the apartment felt thick, heavy with unspoken words that hung between them like a suffocating shroud. Krystal watched AJ from across the living room, her heart a tight knot in her chest. He was on his laptop, the blue light casting sharp shadows on his face, making him look impossibly distant. Every subtle shift in his posture, every almost imperceptible frown, was a siren song to her deepest fears. Dixie’s voice, a gentle echo in her mind, offered a constant, insidious reassurance: *He’s pulling away, Krystal. It’s happening again. They always leave.*

AJ, meanwhile, was a tightly wound spring. Johnny had been his sounding board, a well-meaning but ultimately unhelpful voice of caution. “Just be careful, man,” he’d said, his brow furrowed with a sincerity that AJ, in his current state, twisted into suspicion. “You know how women can be. They say one thing, they mean another. Don’t let her play you.” The words had lodged themselves in AJ’s mind, a persistent burr under his saddle. Every innocent gesture from Krystal, every flicker of emotion on her face, was now scrutinized through the dark lens of his past betrayal. He saw her attempts to connect not as genuine affection, but as calculated moves to mask some hidden deception.

Krystal stood, smoothing down her skirt, a nervous energy thrumming through her. She’d baked his favorite cookies that morning, a small, hopeful gesture. She’d wanted to surprise him, to bring a little sweetness into their increasingly strained days. Now, the plate sat on the coffee table, untouched. “Hey,” she began, her voice softer than she intended, a plea for connection disguised as casual inquiry. “Are you hungry? I made those chocolate chip ones you like.”
