Chapter 4
The Veteran's Gaze
Azuron encounters Gale, a seasoned adventurer who sees his potential. Gale offers cryptic guidance and a small, but significant, clue.
The rustle of leaves under Azuron’s worn boots was a familiar sound, a comforting rhythm against the gnawing uncertainty that often settled in his gut. He adjusted the grip on his father’s hammer, the cool, familiar weight a constant reminder of why he was here, trudging along this overgrown mountain path. Copper-rank. That’s what the guild master had called him, his voice laced with a practiced, almost patronizing, cheerfulness. “A fine start, young Azuron! Just a few goblin bounties, a bit of pest control, and you’ll be earning your keep in no time.”
But Azuron knew it was more than just ‘earning his keep.’ It was about proving himself. Proving that he wasn't just the blacksmith’s son, the boy who’d fled his burning village with nothing but a hammer and a desperate prayer. It was about honoring his father, a man whose quiet strength and skill had been the bedrock of their small community. Every swing of the hammer, every monster he faced, was a step towards that impossible goal.
His current task was simple enough: clear a small nest of shadow-spiders from a cave system a few miles off the main trail. Hardly the stuff of legends, but a start. The forest, however, seemed to have other plans. The air grew heavy, the usual chirping of birds replaced by an unnerving silence. Something was wrong. It wasn't the primal fear of a predator, but a cold, creeping unease, like the scent of decay carried on a phantom breeze.
