Chapter 9
A Reluctant Alliance
Miller, now convinced of a deeper conspiracy, cautiously approaches Sarah. Their shared pursuit of truth forms an uneasy alliance, bridging his logic and her intuition against a common, hidden enemy.
Detective Miller’s logical world had fractured. The neatly cataloged evidence, the predictable patterns of crime, the very fabric of rational deduction – all of it had begun to fray around the edges with Sarah’s increasingly frantic visits to the precinct. He’d dismissed her at first, a distressed young woman grappling with grief, her mind conjuring phantoms from a family history steeped in superstition. But then the disappearances began. Not just one, but three, each vanishing without a trace, leaving behind an unsettling stillness that mirrored the descriptions in Sarah’s fevered ramblings. The details she’d provided, the symbols she’d sketched, the chilling premonitions she’d voiced – they were starting to align with the chillingly sparse details of the missing persons cases.
He found himself staring at a corkboard, a chaotic web of timelines, witness statements, and a single, stark photograph of a missing woman, her eyes wide and vacant. Beside it, tacked with a grim sort of deliberation, was a crude drawing Sarah had made: a coiled serpent, its scales inked with a peculiar, almost runic pattern. He’d scoffed at it then, a childish scribble. Now, it felt like a brand.
He was sitting in his car, parked a discreet distance from Sarah’s small, book-filled apartment, the engine a low thrum against the encroaching twilight. He’d rehearsed the words a dozen times in his head, each iteration feeling more awkward than the last. How did one approach a woman who claimed to be haunted by a generations-old family curse, especially when that woman was the only thread connecting him to a string of baffling disappearances?
