The brittle pages of Great Aunt Clara’s journal felt like dried leaves beneath Sarah’s trembling fingers. Each entry was a whisper from a past she was only just beginning to understand, a past steeped in shadow and a chilling pact. Chapter seven had ended with the unnerving realization that the disappearances in town weren't random acts of violence. They were a terrifyingly consistent echo of something ancient, something Clara had desperately tried to document. Now, Sarah was about to uncover the true, horrific price of that pact.

Clara’s handwriting grew more frantic as she detailed the specifics of the ‘payment.’ It wasn’t a simple offering of gratitude or a symbolic gesture. It was a life. A life given willingly, or perhaps, less so, to appease whatever ancient entity had been invoked. The journal spoke of generations where a chosen member, often one on the cusp of adulthood, would simply vanish. No struggle, no trace, just… gone. A silent void left in their wake.
