Chapter 17
The Hamster Corral: A Furry Fortress
Following their new joint strategy, Drucilla and Sonya, with a little help from a now-cooperative Brenda and her crew, manage to herd the majority of the escaped hamsters. Sonya keeps them entranced with the squeaky toy, while Drucilla, using a series of strategically placed blankets and cardboard boxes, guides them towards the large, empty dog kennel that Mr. Henderson had been storing in his garage. It's a chaotic but surprisingly organized effort, creating a makeshift hamster corral.
The air thrummed with a frantic energy, a symphony of tiny paws skittering and high-pitched squeaks that vibrated through the soles of Drucilla’s sneakers. She clutched a rolled-up picnic blanket like a general wielding a battle standard. Beside her, Sonya, armed with a bright pink squeaky toy that emitted a sound akin to a distressed chipmunk, was already engaged in her own brand of diplomacy, a mischievous grin playing on her lips.
“They like the squeaky!” Sonya chirped, demonstrating with another vigorous squeeze. A small cluster of hamsters, previously engaged in a spirited debate over a discarded bottle cap, paused, their tiny noses twitching in unison, drawn by the irresistible sonic allure.
