Chapter 16
Brenda's Grudging Respect: The Queen Bee Falters
Brenda, observing the sisters' surprisingly effective teamwork from a distance, feels her smug confidence waver. She'd expected them to flounder, to descend into bickering, but instead, they are working in sync. Drucilla’s dramatic gestures, usually a source of ridicule, now seem to be coordinating the hamster movement, while Sonya’s quiet focus is holding their attention. For the first time, Brenda sees not just a drama queen and her little sister, but a surprisingly formidable duo. A reluctant respect begins to dawn.
Brenda adjusted the brim of her sun visor, her eyes narrowed in a way that suggested she was dissecting a particularly stubborn math problem, or perhaps just trying to burn a hole in the fabric of reality with sheer disdain. From her vantage point atop the slightly wobbly fence bordering Mrs. Gable’s prize-winning petunias, she surveyed the unfolding pandemonium with a critical, almost clinical, gaze. Her usual entourage of sycophants, Kevin and Tiffany, hovered nervously behind her, their faces a mixture of awe and mild terror at the sheer, unadulterated chaos erupting on Elm Street.
Normally, the sight of Drucilla, adorned in a hastily assembled “hamster-wrangling” ensemble that involved a colander as a helmet and a feather boa repurposed as a lasso, would have sent Brenda into peals of triumphant, albeit silent, laughter. But today, something was… off. Drucilla, usually a whirlwind of flustered pronouncements and theatrical gestures that bordered on interpretive dance, was… coordinating. Her usually over-the-top arm movements, which Brenda had always dismissed as mere histrionics, were now directing a surprisingly fluid flow of furry bodies. It was less a performance and more a surprisingly effective, albeit bizarre, ballet of rodent redirection.
And Sonya. Little Sonya, the one Brenda had pegged as simply a minor annoyance, a sidekick whose primary function was to trip over her own feet and provide Drucilla with something to boss around, was proving to be… competent. While Drucilla commanded the direction of the hamster horde, Sonya seemed to be the anchor, the quiet force holding their attention. She sat cross-legged on the dew-kissed grass, a single sunflower seed held delicately between her thumb and forefinger, her gaze steady as a dozen tiny, twitching noses focused on her offering. Brenda had seen her whisper to the little creatures, her voice a low murmur that somehow seemed to soothe their frantic energy. It was unnerving.
