The Lantern and the Legacy
Nova follows the mysterious voice deeper into the woods, accompanied by Pip. They meet a gentle, glowing spirit who introduces herself as Eirlys, another of Nova’s ancestors. Eirlys offers Nova a magical lantern and explains that every family member who carried the moonstone also became a guardian of the woods. Nova worries she’s not ready for such a responsibility, but Eirlys reminds her that courage grows with each step. Nova accepts the lantern, feeling both anxious and excited about her new role. The chapter closes with Nova and Pip following the lantern’s gentle light toward the unknown, determined to honor their family’s legacy.
The voice calling my name shimmered between the trees—lovely and strange, like the sound of water under moonlight. Every part of me wanted to run, to leap after it, but my feet felt stuck to the mossy earth.
Pip nudged my ankle. "Should we follow it? Maybe it’s another fox. Or... something even more mysterious."
I tried to sound braver than I felt. "Let’s go. We can’t turn back now—not after what we saw."
