The Grove of Names
Nova and Pip follow the echoing song deeper into the woods, arriving at a hidden grove where the names of Nova’s ancestors are etched into the stones. Uncertain but curious, Nova touches a stone, causing the moonstone in her locket to glow and reveal a vision of her family history. Pip helps her interpret the vision, and Nova feels a growing sense of belonging and responsibility. The chapter ends with a voice—familiar and not—calling Nova’s name from the shadows, urging her onward.
Following the quiet shimmer of the song, Pip and I wove through the birches, their pale trunks glowing in the locket’s soft light. The melody tugged at me, sometimes floating high, sometimes dipping low, but always just ahead—like it wanted us to catch it, but not too quickly.
Pip hopped from root to root, glancing back every few steps. "You’re not going to start floating, are you?" he called, half teasing, half hopeful.
"Only if you promise to catch me," I replied, and we both grinned. My worries felt smaller with Pip beside me and the song threading through the trees.
