Escape from the Shadows
With a final, terrifying burst of speed, they burst out of the tree line, collapsing in exhaustion and relief. They have escaped the woods, but the chilling memory of the hunt remains.
The world outside the woods was a riot of green and gold, sunlight dappling through leaves that weren't gnarly and skeletal, but vibrant and alive. It was a shock, a glorious, blinding shock after the suffocating gloom that had clung to us for what felt like an eternity. My lungs, raw and burning from the desperate scramble, greedily sucked in air that didn't taste of damp earth and fear. Mark, always the first to recover, pushed himself up onto his elbows, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Chloe, her face streaked with dirt and tears, lay beside him, her eyes wide and unfocused, staring at the sky as if she couldn't quite believe it was real.
"We… we made it," Mark croaked, his voice rough. He tried a weak grin, but it faltered, a ghost of the easy humor that had been his shield for so long.
I pushed myself up, my legs trembling like a newborn fawn's. Every muscle screamed in protest, but the overwhelming wave of relief was a powerful anesthetic. We had done it. We had actually, impossibly, escaped. The hunter’s lodge, the chilling map, the guttural sounds that had chased us through the undergrowth – it all seemed like a fever dream now, a nightmare receding with the dawn.
