The Edge of Civilization
They finally see a faint light through the trees—a sign of the edge of the woods. Hope surges, but the entity seems to sense their imminent escape, its pursuit becoming more relentless.
The air thinned, and with it, the oppressive weight that had settled over us like a shroud. It wasn’t a sudden, dramatic shift, but a slow, almost imperceptible easing, like a clenched fist finally unfurling. Sunlight, pale and watery, began to filter through the dense canopy, no longer struggling against the unnatural gloom. We’d been pushing, stumbling, driven by a primal need to escape the suffocating presence that had stalked us for what felt like an eternity. My legs ached, my throat was raw, and the gnawing emptiness in my stomach was a dull, constant throb. But above it all, a flicker of something precious, something almost forgotten, began to ignite: hope.
“Alex… look,” Robin whispered, her voice raspy, pointing a trembling finger ahead.
My eyes followed hers, straining to pierce the remaining tangle of branches. And then I saw it. A faint, ethereal glow. Not the harsh, unforgiving glare of the midday sun, but a softer, more distant luminescence. It was the edge of the woods. The promise of open fields, of familiar fences, of a world that didn’t whisper threats and watch from the shadows. A surge of adrenaline, potent and sweet, coursed through me, momentarily erasing the exhaustion.
